At City Road Primary School, we recognise that mathematics is both a key skill within the school and a life skill to be utilised through everyday experiences. Our high-quality mathematics education provides a firm foundation for understanding how mathematics is used in everyday life and activities, therefore, ensuring all children develop the ability to reason and apply mathematically.

Through the teaching of mathematics, we aim to ensure that our children will be:

  • Fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils will develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.

  • Confident with mathematical reasoning by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships, and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language.

  • Confident to problem-solve by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.

At City Road we use the White Rose scheme. This scheme promotes teaching for mastery which enables our children to acquire a deep, long-term mathematical understanding. The children are then able to apply their knowledge to new and challenging problems.

To support teaching for mastery, we use the Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract (CPA) approach.

Our children start with concrete resources to gain a practical understanding of the concept they are learning.

Once they have securely grasped the concept, the children move on to drawing representations to help problem-solve.

Children carry out written procedures to demonstrate that they have acquired a deeper understanding.
