Our Work

Monday 5 January 2015

Take a look at some of the fantastic work the children in Year 4 have been doing this term!

Our Topic

This half term, our topic will be Saxon Settlers. The children will be learning about many fascinating aspects of Anglo-Saxon history including Saxon settlements, home life and battles. In art, the children will be making their own Saxon jewellery and experimenting with printing techniques.

Next half term, our topic will be Once Upon A Tide. The children will be learning all about oceans and underwater life.

Reading and Writing

Children have daily guided reading sessions in which they read independently or with an adult. They also complete various activities about the books they have read.

Children should also change their library/individual reading books once a week. These books can be taken home. Reading with your child or allowing them to read to you daily will be highly supportive of their learning!

In literacy this half term, the children will be learning about diary writing and letter writing. It might be helpful for children to read examples of these texts at home, both independently and with parents.

Each Friday, children will be set literacy homework which is usually linked to their topic. They will also be set MyMaths tasks or a written maths task. Homework should be completed in Learning Logs and returned by the following Tuesday. We encourage then children to spend time on producing high quality, creative homework. Here are some excellent examples!

Daily reading, spelling and timetables practice should also be done at home.

Children will have opportunities to write in their reading journals about what they have read at home.

This half term, Year 4 will be visiting the Anglo-Saxon exhibition at Biringham Museum and Art Gallery. This will reinforce the children’s learning from their Saxon Settlers topic.

Next half term, we will be visiting the National Sea Life Centre in Birmingham. This will link to our next topic, Once Upon A Tide.

The Scientist for 4B is Thomas Edison.

He is famous for inventing the electric light system, the phonograph and motion pictures.

The Scientist for 4N is Jane Goodall.
