Birmingham City University’s vision is ‘to be the leading university for creative and professional practice inspired by innovation and enquiry’. The field of teacher education is a key aspect of our professional practice provision. To remain a leader in this field, we need to adapt to the changes in Government policy and the additional expectations being placed upon us by Ofsted. The best universities are now expected to have direct rather than just indirect involvement in schools.
Establishing BCUAT as an separate educational trust provides us with the means to achieve this in a way which also helps us to deliver our mission ‘to transform the prospects of individuals, employers and society through excellence in practice-based education, research and knowledge exchange’.
Having direct responsibility for a small cluster of schools gives BCUAT a unique opportunity to help raise aspiration and positively influence the life chances of the pupils in its schools within the city of Birmingham. It also gives those schools and their pupils access to leading-edge innovative and effective approaches to teaching and learning, and provides University staff and students with direct access to a professional practice environment as the real-world context for their higher education studies. It allows the University to talk with added authority in the circles that matter and which influence the future of schools and the future of university involvement in teacher education.
To be the leading academies trust for school excellence, embedding teacher education, innovation and enquiry.
To transform the prospects of children by providing inspirational learning experiences through excellence in teaching, teacher education, research and innovation.
